Tactplan turns your location-based, takt-driven schedule into a clear, convincing animation of the build sequence, using open standards and free open-source tools. Developed and tested by our own team on real projects, it gives owners and trade contractors a shared, calm understanding of the plan, created by you or by us.

  • It starts from a real, buildable plan. The simulation reflects your actual takt and location-based sequence, not a separate animation built for show. What people watch is what you intend to build.
  • It uses open standards. The workflow moves data through IFC and CSV, which are open, vendor-neutral formats, so you are never locked in and your model stays portable.
  • It is proven and low-cost. Blender and Bonsai are free. The workflow is tested on real projects by the team that builds Tactplan, so you get a dependable result without a heavy software investment.

The workflow, at a high level

You do not need to be a 3D artist to follow this.
The process is designed to be reliable and repeatable.

You plan as you normally would in Tactplan — locations, takt, flowlines, resources and quantities. Nothing about your normal planning process changes at this stage.
When the schedule is ready, you export it with a couple of clicks. No manual data entry or file conversion is needed on your side.
You open your building model in Blender together with Bonsai. A small plugin developed by our team imports your Tactplan schedule and connects it to the model.
The elements can be linked to your tasks automatically when the model and schedule share a common naming, or manually if you prefer full control. From there, the animation is generated for you, at whatever pace suits your audience, for example one second of animation per week of work.
You make it beautiful. Realistic materials, natural light, the actual terrain around your site, and details such as cranes and site sheds turn the animation into something an owner immediately understands. None of this requires expensive rendering software.

The tools behind it: Free and open

Blender is a free, open-source 3D program used worldwide, from film studios to architecture practices. Bonsai is a free extension that lets Blender read and work with IFC, the open international standard for building models published by buildingSMART. Because every step uses open formats and open tools, your model and your data stay yours — no licenses to buy, no lock-in to worry about.

The only element unique to Tactplan is the schedule itself and the small plugin our team built to bring your plan into Blender cleanly. Everything else is trusted, community-maintained software you can adopt with confidence.

Some teams want to build these simulations in-house. Others simply want the finished animation for a tender, an owner meeting, or a coordination workshop. Both are fine.

You can follow the workflow yourself with our guidance, or engage Tactplan's team on a consulting basis.
